Fresh arborist mulch from TB'S Trees, Bendigo

TB'S Trees runs local mulch sales across Bendigo as a natural product of our arborist work. Every time we prune or remove a tree on a Bendigo property, the branches and leafy material go through the chipper and become arborist mulch — coarse, natural, woody mulch that's one of the best low-cost products you can put on a garden. We sell it three ways: in a convenient 30L bag for small jobs and top-ups, in a 5m³ half-load for the standard garden mulch order, and in a 10m³ full load for larger Bendigo gardens, rural blocks and bigger landscape projects.

The mulch is fresh from real tree work on real Bendigo properties — local trees, local gardens, local loop. Coarse arborist mulch like this retains soil moisture, suppresses weeds, moderates soil temperature, feeds the soil as it breaks down, prevents erosion, and finishes off any garden bed looking neat. For the cost of a single load, your Bendigo garden uses less water, grows fewer weeds, copes better with summer heat and steadily improves its soil. There aren't many garden jobs that deliver that kind of return.

Why mulch is one of the best jobs you can do in a Bendigo garden

A good layer of mulch over your Bendigo garden beds delivers a long list of benefits — easily the highest return-on-effort job most Bendigo gardens get all year:

  • It retains soil moisture. Mulch dramatically slows evaporation, so the soil stays moist longer — a huge advantage through Bendigo's hot, dry summers. Less watering, healthier plants.
  • It suppresses weeds. A good mulch layer blocks light to weed seeds, drastically reducing the weeds that emerge and making the ones that do easy to pull.
  • It moderates soil temperature. Mulch insulates the soil, keeping roots cooler through Bendigo summers and more protected through cold winter nights.
  • It feeds the soil. Coarse arborist mulch breaks down slowly, adding organic matter and improving soil structure and life year on year.
  • It prevents erosion and surface crusting. Mulch shields the soil from heavy rain and from baking hard in the summer sun.
  • It looks fantastic. A fresh, even layer of mulch instantly makes Bendigo garden beds look neat, finished and cared for.

What "arborist mulch" actually is

Arborist mulch is the chipped product from our tree work — the branches, bark and leafy material from tree removal and tree pruning jobs around Bendigo, run through a chipper on site. That makes it a coarse, natural, varied mulch rather than a uniform processed product. The variability is a feature, not a bug — it's how you get a mulch that builds soil over time, holds together as a layer on the ground, and looks at home in a natural Australian garden.

Because our mulch comes from real tree work, the exact species mix varies through the year with whatever we've been working on. You'll generally get a mix of Central Victorian eucalypts, plus garden trees and ornamentals from suburban Bendigo properties. We'll tell you what's in the current stockpile when you order.

How to use mulch in a Bendigo garden

Using mulch well is straightforward:

  1. Prep the bed. Pull out the worst of the existing weeds first — a good mulch layer will keep new weeds down, but it doesn't kill established ones.
  2. Water first. Mulch locks in the moisture that's already there, so water the bed properly before mulching, especially in summer.
  3. Spread evenly. An even layer of 75–100mm (about 3–4 inches) does the job. Less than 50mm and weed suppression suffers.
  4. Keep it back from trunks and stems. Leave a small clear gap around the base of plants and trees — mulch piled against trunks holds moisture against the bark and can cause problems.
  5. Top up over time. Coarse mulch breaks down slowly. A top-up every 12–24 months keeps the layer working.

If you're mulching a large area, our mini loader service can spread the load for you and save a lot of barrowing — ask about it when you order the mulch.

How much mulch do you need?

Quick rule of thumb at 100mm depth:

  • ~10m² of garden bed → 1m³ of mulch
  • ~25m² → ~2.5m³
  • ~50m² (an average suburban Bendigo back garden) → 5m³ (one half-load)
  • ~100m² (a substantial garden or several large beds) → 10m³ (a full load)

If you want a thinner layer (75mm) you'll cover roughly 30% more area per cubic metre; a thicker layer (150mm) covers around 30% less. Measure the rough area of the beds, pick your depth, and we'll size the order for you. It's generally worth ordering enough to do the job properly plus a little spare for top-ups.

Frequently asked questions

Arborist mulch is a coarse, natural mulch made of branch wood, bark and leaf material chipped on site during tree work. Because it comes from real tree work rather than a factory line, it's a varied, natural product that builds healthy soil over time as it breaks down. It's one of the best low-cost things you can put on a Bendigo garden.
Roughly, 1 cubic metre of mulch covers about 10 square metres at a depth of 100mm (10cm), or around 13 square metres at 75mm. Measure the rough area of your garden beds, pick a depth, and we'll help translate that into a quantity.
Delivery is FREE within a 20km radius of Bendigo — Bendigo, Golden Square, Kangaroo Flat, Strathfieldsaye, Eaglehawk, Epsom, Maiden Gully, Junortoun, California Gully, Huntly and Marong. For Axedale, Heathcote and other locations further out, delivery is by quote. Pick-up can also be arranged.
Not always — as long as you let us know where on site you want the load dropped, we can deliver while you're out. For bag orders, we'll usually arrange a time that suits both of us.
Cash on delivery is preferred. Bank transfer can also be arranged before delivery. All prices are plus GST if applicable.
Yes — if you're doing a larger area, our mini loader service can spread mulch for you and save a lot of barrowing. Ask about it when you order.
Used as a surface mulch over the soil, coarse arborist mulch is fine — the breakdown happens slowly at the soil/mulch boundary and actually feeds the soil over time. The temporary nitrogen draw-down concern only really applies if you mix raw woody material deep into the soil, which is not how mulch is meant to be used.
